ProBlogger Returned to StumbleUpon in Record Time!

Just saw this tweet from Darren. That was fast. 8-)

    ProBlogger victory cry

But Igor the Troll thinks it might have been a scam.

Either way, that was an amazingly short period of time for a reaction. Thanks to everyone who rallied. This proves how much things are changing.

Apparently the social media love-in was not appreciated. It’s all over now, though. Took about 15 minutes to get it reversed.

Not appreciated is a bit vague though, it’d be interesting to hear what their exact reason for the ban was, or if it was just some person’s arbitrary decision. I would expect a bit more criticism, instead of a “yay, it’s back, who cares what happened”, especially given the context of this site. If it had been anyone but Darren they would still be banned.

I agree, and you are not the first to point that out…there has been much of that on the micro-bloggers. That’s good. People need to remember that, because that feeling will make them remember to come to other people’s aid, who aren’t A-list.

As for Stumble’s reasons…Darren mentioned thinking it was because they thought he was gaming their system somehow…the huge influx of stumbles combined with a concentrated block of people friending each other.

I thought the social media event was well done. Bravo! As everyone in here knows, ” Space is only as deep as one makes it.” I have been a MSN kind of person for a couple of years and it is ok. Digg sucks, Facebook sucks, HiFive and all the creepy wanna be places suck. There is no content. That has value. Then again Google rocks.
I have had three pay checks from Google.
Just a thought. Space is only as deep as one makes it. As ever be well, Stephen Craig Rowe

ProBlogger Banned by StumbleUpon: Whose Content? Our Content!

Just saw this from Darren over at ProBlogger. Seems StumbleUpon didn’t like the recent surge from the love-in. Now, StumbleUpon has the right to control who uses their service. However, social bookmarking services make their living on OUR content, the content we produce which they then funnel through their service.

David (theGypsy) had a similar point here. We make these companies what they are, and then they treat us like they are doing us a favor by letting us do so. What service or product, precisely, do any of these sites provide that do not directly or indirectly start with us, the online community? Is it right that they should be able to dictate terms to the people who generate the content they make money upon? What is that old expression about biting the hand that feeds?

Remember the DVD code debacle? Kevin and Digg kept face in the community by recognizing where the real power is in social media…the users. The reason Darren got banned was most likely (I can’t presume to speak for Stumble) the Social Media Love-In, which was a whole bunch of us getting together and exchanging our connections. Stumble benefits financially from us and our connections, and yet Darren is being penalized for something that will bring Stumble profits. How can this be right?

Here is StumbleUpon’s contact page. Make your opinions known.

My email to Stumble, feel free to copy and paste:

I use your service and am an advertiser with you. I am writing to protest the banning of http://www.problogger.net from your service. Darren and other web professionals produce the content and attract the users who fuel your business. I urge you to reconsider your choice. The social media community is very displeased.
